Anyone see it? I really want to read everyone's thoughts on it. I didn't like it and don't find the film's "reversal of roles" or play with WW2 iconography and history meaningful. I understand some people who defend the film and say it's Tarantino slapping the wrist of those indulging in sadism kind of like Haneke with Funny Games, etc., but I just didn't get that feeling when I saw the film.
With that said, I thought Christoph Waltz was incredible. Laurent and Kruger were great. And I laughed at the language situational comedy in the premier scene. The opening scene was great.
re: the film's last line
Please, man.
I liked it more than Kino. It is sure as hell a Tarantino movie. I expecting something that would be more like 2.5 hours of Chapter 2 of the film, basically following the IBs as they did their thing. Instead, the film has three different threads weaving together as the movie progresses.
Waltz is certainly the highlight. He is acting the crap out of everyone on screen and he does it while seemingly effortlessly moving between 4 different languages. Incredible.
It is quite an odd movie overall. With a runtime of 152 minutes, there are maybe a dozen scenes, which is startingly low. When Pitt, Laurent, or Waltz was onscreen, you realize that the other two havent been for the last 20 minutes. The structure is just different.
I had a good time.

I had a lot of fun watching this film. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, if that makes sense. The storylines and characters were far more ambitious than I had imagined. I was expecting Tarantino to go "Hostel", and just show brutal slayings of Nazis while Brad Pitt talked funny for the entire film. That was only 25 - 30 % of the film, maybe. Still, I was a little heart broken to hear Tarantino take from Morricone's "The Battle of Algiers" score. I just wanted to stand up in the theater and tell people what a better movie that is. When he steals from films I am unaware of, it goes over my head, but when he steals from one of my favorites, it sort of ruins it for me, for a moment.
As you said Kino, great opening scene, taken straight from a Leone film. "Papa!" ;D And Waltz is terrifying. Tarantino used his presence to frame some very suspenseful dialogue driven scenes ("Wait for the cream!"). And the extended scene in the tavern with the drinking game was very tense.
I am still having a hard time deciding how I feel about this film. Especially in the context of different views of film criticism being passed around on here. Not to mention that the film had A LOT going on in it.
