Those Awful HatsDW Griffith 1909 USA At a cinema, ladies wearing big hats that block others' views cause a stir. Finally, a big crane lifts one of them into the sky.
Made by the director whom many attribute as the father of narrative cinema, this shows a self-reflexive slant, made before he ventured into more moralistic territory (he made A Corner in Wheat the same year, however). It’s funny and short, with an audience watching a film within the film; it happens to be a special effects marvel.
