Trapeze Disrobing Act George S. Fleming / Edwin S. Porter 1901 USA Two men watch on with excitement as a woman disrobes herself whilst performing on a trapeze. Visual dilemma within the frame: on the far left you have the two voyeurs, on the far right the subject of desire; in between there is a gulf of non-information (or is it just effectively invisible mise-en-scène?), a theatre stage within the camera's stage. It is of interest because it integrates a mode of spectatorship into the narrative (the camera is placed as if in the audience), which runs central to a medium based around watching.
