The Biter BitJames Bamforth 1900 UK A remake of the Lumières' L'arroseur arrosé.
Superior remake because there's a lot more to it, a lot more thought put into it. The situation, of a man sprinkling his lawn and a boy playing a trick on him, isn't filmed head-on as in the Lumières' film; the man is in long-shot, the boy in mid-shot, so that there is a spatial expansion, not merely a redo of a theatrical presentation. The punishment isn't spanking, either, but a sprinkling of water back in the boy's face... which seems more just and universal.
