The Kiss William Heise 1896 USA A man and woman kiss. And they kiss with half an eye each on the camera, or the audience watching them. If we watch from a distance (such as the distance stemming from historical alienation) we find it funny or cute, but there is something incredibly complex which comes from such a simple minute-long (if that) piece of film. For starters, it marks Cinema as an evocation of romance, and one cannot help but smile within at the bittersweet nostalgia which ends Cinema Paradiso.
