L'arroseur arrosé The Sprinkler SprinkledLouis Lumière 1895 France A man hoses his garden; a boy creeps behind him, stands on the hose, sprays it into the man's face, and is spanked for punishment.
Crude and interesting because of that: the spraying in the face is by-now predictable (it may even have been back then), and as the boy tries to run off and runs the risk of leaving the frame, he is dragged back into the centre of frame because the camera is unable to move... the action follows the camera, the camera does not follow the action. Especially of interest when you view Bamforth's superior remake five years later.
