The Paradine Case Alfred Hitchcock 1947 USA A renowned lawyer defends a woman against murder charges, and gradually falls in love with her. What is it about courtroom dramas which is so cinematically dull? There's a beautiful, memorable panning shot here which captures the tragic, suspected heroine in close-up with her would-be lover entering the trial to take the stand as witness, and we see him move through the frame while her position never changes. It strives for the same psychological heights as Rebecca but seems a tad flat; a happily married man falls in love to the point that his case and career come under major jeopardy, not to mention his marriage. Peck, as wooden as ever, couldn't carry films outside the courtroom; interesting concept, dull execution.
