Abraham Lincoln DW Griffith 1930 USA The life and death of Abraham Lincoln, from his days as a successful lawyer to Civil War triumphs, and finally his assassination in a theatre. Griffith's first venture into sound is a crude, succinct biopic which gains much from Walter Huston's performance in the lead role. It's a rather ordinary film, really, whose best scenes come early on, long before Lincoln becomes President, with Huston and Una Merkel sharing a convincing chemistry as young would-be lovers. Griffith always saved his best scenes till the end, and this is no exception.
