To Catch a Thief Alfred Hitchcock 1955 USA An ex-jewel thief goes on the run from the police to expose the cat burglar who is imitating his old style. Peripheral if enjoyable Hitchcock film which suffers mostly from Cary Grant's lack of conviction as an anti-hero (the reason why Suspiscion isn't nearly as effective as it could be). Grant is brilliant in North by Northwest because he's an innocent in way over his head, and his natural mannerisms seem at home, but here he seems in over his head in the acting sense. There's a car chase early on filmed from high overhead, shot impressively enough to be of worth - though as a setpiece it is rather frivolous - and there is fun to be had in the final scene at a masked ball. It also contains one of Cinema's most explosively unexpected kisses, when Grant follows Grace Kelly to her room and meets his match, and her mouth. Otherwise, wishy-washy.
