Raiders of the Lost Ark Steven Spielberg 1981 USA In the 1930s, an American archeologist races the Nazis to a magical box containing God's laws. A succession of - and excuse for - decorative set-pieces, the credits sequence being the best and most elaborately designed; it's rather violent and grusome in a "let's all have some fun" sort of way (only Spielberg is successful in this blend of adventurous fun and serious peril, with the snake pit here having a nastiness to it which is equalled in Hook by the scorpions in the casket). Ford is very good, but the climax is lazy and the narrative is bland.
