After Hours Martin Scorsese 1985 USA An office worker spends a hectic night in SoHo, wanting to get home but finding that the train fare has gone up, his date has a few secrets he'd rather not know, and the locals want to kill him. Scorsese made this relatively low-budget picture to make money and take a break from more exhausting projects; the result is a very underrated and, in the context of his oeuvre as a whole, overlooked film, with little-known faces but great performances from them. It boasts great flair - in directing so that we are entirely involved in the paranoid protagonist's perceptions, Scorsese creates a world of bizarre, surreal suffocation, a successive and slightly excessive comedy of situations, each of which better, or more outrageous, than the last.
