Garden State
Zach Braff 2004 USA 1st time
A young aspiring actor flies back home to his alienated Jersey hometown for his paralyzed mothers funeral.
For years, I was completely blundered by the thought of constructing a realistic explanation for this film. About a dozen people had told me it was excellent, and about another dozen refered to it as a "chick flick" by which I assumed they meant (in their way of interpretting cinema using their small, boxed-in notion of film) it was an overly-sappy and cliche romance film. But the visual style displayed in the trailer recently peaked my interest. Zach Braff has a tremendously original talent for cinematography. He combines a number of stylistic choices, including wide-lenses, awkwardly bizarre images, and stationary, symetrical shots that ultimately provide a very smooth experience on the eyes. The humor is excellent too... I spent many passages of time laughing, in which I found myself stopping to rewind sections of the film in order to catch any dialouge I may have missed.
Braff is more than just a clever cinematographer... His dialogue is funny and natural. It would also seem as if he squeezed excellent performances out of his actors. In all, I went into this movie the best possible way to go into any subject of art... with a completely neutral expectation. I had no idea what to expect, and I enjoyed the film all the more as a result. In all, Garden State is a very enjoyable, funny, intelligent, and reccomendable piece that is sure to recieve the embracing it deserves. I am certainly interested in seeing what directorial works Braff will produce in the future.
