War of the WorldsSteven Spielberg 2005 USA Machines take over the Earth, while a divorced father of two strives to make it to safety.
The opening third is very solid stuff, up there with the best of what Spielberg has crafted, but thereafter it's a bit muddled - a perplexing cameo from Tim Robbins and a lazily abrupt ending notified by Morgan Freeman's comforting voice. As an action film it's patchy, as a Spielberg film it's even more patchy, but it's a hell of a lot better than his other film this year, Munich, mostly because it doesn't waste time in expositing itself, and for the most part is convincing in its production values and execution.
