An exceedingly playful and clever film which pushes boundaries in a fast, exciting way; the intertextuality is here used to explore both the novel it is adapting, and to offer a witty insight into the filmmaking process. Actors play themselves playing other people playing literary characters, with the fourth wall being broken constantly and realities being stripped away just when they get to their most intriguing. Winterbottom is one of the most interesting (and prolific) of British directors, and here he has made a funny and deeply involving film.
