Forrest Gump Robert Zemeckis 1994 USA A retarded boy grows up to become an NFL player, a Vietnam vet, a ping-pong champion and a millionaire. Hanks's performance is excellent in this ferociously fast and constantly moving film which may well sweep you away if it finds you in the right mood. It'd be repulsively mawkish if it wasn't so ridiculously silly; it brought "historical epics" back into fashion, took the box-office by storm and won a shitload of Oscars - some stylish marks here and there from Zemeckis, with inventive, clever nods to the recent history of the US as it intersects with a stupid but loveable hero - on these levels, it sort of combines the narrative structure of Ben-Hur (1959) and the character appeal of Dumb & Dumber (1994).
