Amores perros Love's a BitchAlejandro González Iñárritu 2000 Mexico The lives of three people are connected by a horrific car crash.
A confidently made debut feature, with a non-linear structure bringing together various circumstances of love and its consequences - the most recurring or obvious consequence being sacrifice, of one's own known world for a one which appeals more. Most of the time, the sacrifices backfire, and those pursuing love end up in anguish - though it ends on an optimistic note, with one man's generosity bringing him, at first, ironic despair (a dog he saves kills all the other dogs he lives with), and then showing him the light (he happens to be a ruthless for-hire assassin). It's a complex drama about miserable people doing the dirty on each other, with an horrific car crash shown several times from different points of view; works on several thematic levels throughout: around the love and sacrifice, there is the class system, chance/fate, religion, the price of human life (which becomes prominent in 21 Grams), and peppered almost in every scene strolls a dog, vicious, loyal, tender and in need of love as much as whichever human who owns it.

I saw this at my local Blockbuster the other day and I'm most definitely checking it out.

Unfortunately, my local Hollywood video doesn't have it. Which is a shame, I've been wanting to see it before I see Babel. I saw 21 Grams, before I knew there was a trilogy, and it was spectacular.
I'm probably going to have to buy this one, once I have the funds to get back into the swing of purchasing all my movies.

Amores Perros is an excellent movie and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Great non-linear editing and direction. I don't know if it is a good idea to buy without seeing it. Try downloading it first, if you don't have any ethical objections to it.
