Hable con ella Talk To Her Pedro Almodóvar 2002 Spain A journalist and doctor meet by chance when the matador girlfriend of the former is comatosed and brought to the same hospital as the latter's love. For all its expected absurdities, this seems Almodóvar's most naturalistic film, a most liberating work, in treatment of narrative, character, sexuality and the feelings and emotions it deals with; a very humane film with complex issues at work - love, desire, loneliness and how (in a very self-reflexive way) works of Art may affect us at different stages of our life (the two stageplays within the film, one at the beginning and one at the end, show, respectively, one viewer deeply hurt, and then the same viewer deeply optimistic). Its structure is very casual, with the director's usual jumping back and forth in time to, exposit in flashback or to cut out a lot of preamble - it's economic and exciting storytelling, but the kind which places emotions to the fore via brilliant, subtle acting. And the two bull fight scenes would have made Bacon's mouth water.

I watched this again the other night, and didn't know what to make of it.
I'd be interested in whether or not bobbyreed still thinks highly of it. (I do, I think. I'm not entirely sure why, though.)

It's been two years since I saw it, and I'm not sure what I'd think of it as a whole, or Almodóvar in general, if I watched it now, though I do still think some of the scenes, especially the silent film, are very good. I'll try to rewatch it soon and get back to you.
