Once John Carney 2006 | Ireland
A busker in Dublin acquaints an immigrant, and falls for her as they record an album together.
A refreshing musical in which the songs are part of the diegesis (as opposed to an intrusion upon otherwise realism), which also happens to be an encouraging lesson in low-budget filmmaking (a must-see for budding directors everywhere). It's a simple romantic comedy which gains much from its two central performances; the development of their friendship/love might be implausible, and the ease with which they settle recording time might be optimistic, but Carney seems aware enough of pitfalls. Indeed, like the characters themselves, Carney seems desperate to give the fuck-it ending we hope for, and relishes the challenge of writing a script (and drawing performances to match) that flirts throughout with cliché, only to wrong-foot itself and stay delightfully modest. The songs are brilliant, too.

I'd leave the topic-opener up; I took the liberty of deleting all else. (Will delete this and your last post, too, once you've read this.)
