Where else do you see him as the pathetic psychopath? Maybe Raging Bull? I can see psychopath being a fitting description for a lot of his characters, but I wouldn't say pathetic. Rocky and Bullwinkle.

I think Rupert Pupkin and Travis Bickle, along with Johnny Boy and Jake La Motta, are all pathetic creatures.

No. I joined the student film union here. Fifteen quid for twenty-two films until December.

I see what people are talking about with your reviews Capo. A bad rating for the film but I have no idea what you didn't like about it.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind(2004/Michel Gondry) [Fourth Viewing] After a bad relationship, a man seeks to erase part of his memory.Heartbreaking yet beautiful film that is flawless on every level. Jim Carrey delivers his most subdued and best performance, while Kate Winslet delivers her most charismatic and best. Charlie Kaufman and his collaborators have developed such a unique and absorbing look at memory, relationships, and life, while director Gondry fully supports all involved with such amazing skill behind the camera. I'm repeating myself, I know, but I'm so glad I revisited this film and experienced it's magic once again. Diarios de motocicleta (The Motorcycle Diaries)(2004/Walter Salles) [Second Viewing] Before he became a revolutionist, 'Che' Guevara and a companion travel across South America. There was a screening of this on campus last night, and I hadn't seen it since it's original theatrical run. The beauty of this film can't be easily described. And Gael Garcia Bernal has got to be one of the most talented actors working today. His narration (straight from Guevara's novel) spoken over beautiful South American scenery...

Top Gun Tony Scott 1986 US 1st time; DVD A brilliant fighter jet pilot arrives at the elite training ground, Top Gun, with ambitions of becoming the best. Cruise has developed drastically as an actor, but here he plays the familiar role of his early career: the arrogant rebel destined for success, with his biggest adversity being his own ego. Formulaic stuff, not to mention one of the cheesiest films ever made, but there are some impressive shots of distant planes against sunsets. It probably boasts the most dangerous level of testosterone ever produced in a man's action film (the oily flesh on show in the volleyball scene being a notable example), and the line which comes from an angry higher-up at one point, "I want some butts!" rings alarming bells.

Footloose (1984/Ross)A decent enough teenage film with suprisingly strong religious and social messages. Kevin Bacon is enjoyable, but Chris Penn and John Lithgow (in a dramatic role suprisingly) were great.

And so begins October. Irréversible Irreversible Gaspar Noé 2002 France 4th time; DVD Top 5 When his girlfriend is raped at a party, a teacher and his friend hunt down the rapist at a gay nightclub. What begins as a brutally, disturbingly violent film turns out to be a calmly, gently uplifting one - but for the fact the narrative order is reversed (or is it?). Noé films in long-takes, with his camera in constant movement, swirling and disorientating; the pivotal moment is the rape scene, for which the camera finally settles on one axis, and shows us the shocking incident with an unflinching gaze, the one time we'd prefer to move elsewhere. The use of sound is fantastic: the whirring low frequency bass in the earlier scenes in the gay nightclub, and the deep passing of cars over the subway, while Belucci screams for her life over the sound of the fleshy friction of her rape.

La Science des rêves (The Science of Sleep)(2006/Michel Gondry) [First Viewing] A young man moves to Paris and falls in love with his neighbor.Gondry paints a beautiful picture of the wild and crazy world inside the main character's mind. He brings to mind ideas from past filmmakers who are long gone, yet his energy and skill reveal something that is all his own. The visuals are amazing, the script is very funny and is able to keep it's balance when it goes serious, and the supporting cast (as well as Bernal) is wonderful.

I think from now on instead of posting a proview after every time I watch a movie, I'm going to do a monthly update, listing each film with its rating, and elaborate on the films upon request.
