Ye Lou (1965- )"Up and coming" Chinese director who was banned from making films for 2 years by his government in 2000 for the "provocative" Suzhou River, a strangely highly regarded film by a strangely highly regarded director. If anyone's seen any of his stuff and can shed some light on the quality of it, i'd be grateful! 1. Summer Palace (2006) 4/102. Suzhou River (2000) 2/10

1. Summer Palace 5/10
The VO narration was abominable, really killed the film. Thanks for saving me the trouble of watching Suzhou River.

Suzhou River I don't know what you found so terrible in this movie. I can understand not rating it high, but a rating of 2, come on!

1. Suzhou River (2006) *****
I saw it on the big screen as part of a weekly film course I attended in my mid-teens. Can't really remember much other than a provocative post-film debate (of which I can't remember much), and thinking at the time it was a sort of Vertigo remake told entirely in POV shots.
I'd like to see it again.

Because a cheesy and downright terrible film is so obviously over influenced by Vertigo why would that mean that i'd slag it off?
I'm sure you wouldn't be able to understand why i give Irreversible a 1 rating or Pan's Labyrinth a 3 rating or why i think The New World is bullshit either so why should i bother explaining it? Not that you asked for an explanation, you just made an aggressive comment about my rating, not being open to an explanation at all. Do you call that film discussion?

Man, you are taking my comments the wrong way! No aggression at all intended, whichever way it came across finally. Please, explain your ratings for each of those films. I am curious to know (I haven't seen New World, so not so curious on that one, still).

That is insulting man!. I don't read critics at all until after I watch a movie and totally like it. There was a big discussion on critics and long essays here - in short, I am not a big fan of that stuff. BTW did you read my proview of Suzhou River that I linked? My reaction was very subtle, no superlative stuff, actually I didn't even know it was highly rated.

It was supposed to be insulting svsg, i felt insulted by your comment about not knowing what i found so terrible about the film without even taking the time to wonder or ask what i found so terrible about it. And then of course it's my fault for taking it in the wrong way, it couldn't possible be that you'd written it in a closed way that warrants no reponse could it? But anyway, who cares, i thought it was shite and you liked it (just like all the 'writers'}, each to their own! I've seen probably a thousand films since i watched it, so not going to go deep into my mind to respond to your closed off comments explaining why i thought it was shite. Be a bit more open in future and you'll get a more open response. Happy NY!.........WOman

Seriously, though, you really thought this warning-in-jest was aggressive? And you don't think that dropping a link to the film's specific thread - as svsg did above - isn't encouraging film discussion in itself? The guy's directed you to the film's thread, for Christ's sake.

Ah shit sorry to hear about the family.
No i find dropping in links without even a nice word like "hey check out my proview" is lazy and incommunicative, i don't respond to that kind of internet language bullshit. SPEAK to me for Christ's sake!
It wasn't the warning in jest that i found aggressive, it was this How can she possibly know what i found so terrible without asking and then basically saying my rating is bullshit. If someone hates or loves a film i feel the complete opposite about, i TRY to ask them why as they may've seen something i didn't. Like with you with Waltz With Bashir.

Ah.
As ever, then, the problem's a linguistic one.
I'd read that svsg post as basically asking you to justify or elaborate on your low rating. Isn't saying, "I don't know what you found so terrible in this movie," the same as "What did you find so terrible in this movie?"
Like wetdog asking Pherdy in the Coen brothers' thread, "How in Hades is Intolerable Cruelty better than Miller's Crossing?" Of course, Pherdy responded to that by sending an envelope of anthrax to Ireland, so aggressive was wetdog's perceived tone...

I now know what she meant, but maybe she needs to write it in a clearer and more open way so as not to be seen to slag off my opinion before even finding out what it is. I don't see what's wrong with requesting that? eh nup, otherwise it'd be the same wouldn't it One's an open ended question, the others a statement that doesn't even contain a ?.......In the example you posted above, wetdog is at least asking pherdy a question. Pedantic maybe, i just get tired of lazy internet communication and wasn't in the mood to move my way around more of it this morning. Fuck it's not like i'm unknown for trouncing people's opinions in the past as i'm sure you all know, but i've tried to leave all that behind and speak to others on the net in a more open and welcoming way, well....most of the time anyway

BTW, I am not a woman and the gender in my profile was changed recently in response to DVC's JOKE (you see, lazy internet shortcut again ). Anyway, I've changed it back. On topic, I don't want to add anything, it has become totally silly.

I don't see what's wrong with requesting that? Sorry, but that's not a question; or if it is, it insultingly cuts corners. You should have written, "What is so wrong in requesting that?" Not, "I don't see..." I have nothing more to add, either. ;D
