José Luis Guerín (1960- )Had never even heard of this guy until recently, he seems criminally unknown! Possibly the discovery film-maker of the year for me.... Anyone heard of him or seen any? 1. Train of Shadows (1997) 9/102. In the City of Sylvia (2007) 8.5/103. En construcción (2001) 8/104. Innisfree (1990) 7/105. Some Photos from the City of Sylvia (2007) 6/10

Kind of looks like Eric Bana.
Nice to know there's a good, active Spanish director.
There's a Spansih retrospective starting next week but the only film with subs is "The Secret life of Words" by Isabelle Coixet.
I'm sure I'll see it regardless but do you know anything about her?

Albert Serra is just as good and important active Spanish director, but yeah it's been great to discover two word class Spanish directors as i thought they were a dying breed. I've seen two of the North American films Coixet's made, My Life to Live which i thought had the most self-centred lead character i've ever seen while really not intending to, so wasn't a big fan of it, BUT i saw Elegy with Ben Kingsley and Penelope Cruz last week and was very surprised to have liked it so much, really deeply felt and moving love story that could so easily have fallen into sentiment, but rises above it to remain really quite beautiful, believable and absorbing throughout. She's a talented film-maker definitely. Let me know if you check this one out!
