I really have no idea how to rate this film, it's all over the place but its caprice almost makes it all the more brilliant and abstract.
Definitely shows much more talent than the other J-horror directors at the very least, so I will check out more when I get a chance.

I don't class him as a horror director, just a director who's exploring social and psychological issues in such a way that gets them pigeon holed in that genre, Doppelganger for instance is a comedy despite being promoted as a horror.
All the films of his i've seen are very different and cover very different themes in quite abstract ways, it's not always working, but it's very interesting. I really want to see Pulse as Slant magazine have it listed in the "100 Essential Films" list and i'm trying to see as many of them as possible.

Yea I didn't mean to call him horror, Pulse definitely makes fun of the standard genre conventions but it seems as though some of the commentary was obvious through the use of dialgoue.
At the same time the editing, strong visual mood, and complete peculiarity of what transpires almost makes it brilliant.
I'm still thinkin about it, may watch it again. Naturally none of the critics are helping be put my finger on it.

No they never do, his stuff is very abstract and there is a lot of underlying meaning i think, the sound design is very impressive too, as are the performances mostly.
