You know, Mamet in recent years has politically converted from liberal to conservatism (which must make him pretty popular at the liberal blog The Huffington Post, which he still posts for), and his recent crop of pictures have reflected this turn like SPARTAN and REDBELT.
But fuck, I can't help but think that he's quite improved as a director. Sure his main directorial strength, like Woody Allen, is that his films live and die on his scripts. His SPARTAN, as he's claimed, is his personal THE SEARCHERS (guy trying to live up to some sort of self-crusade in world that don't give a fuck about).
Now REDBELT was pretty good too, and he claimed it was his attempt to go Akira Kurosawa, or trying to have a protagonist try to establish his own honor code, and try to live up to it.
I'm sure Capo will trash both as pretentious pandering bullshit, but I quite liked them. Lets hope this Mamet stays with us.

1. House of Games (1987) *****
I'd like to see that again. Sight & Sound's write-up on Redbelt has me muchly interested, too.

Hey who's supposed to be updating the A-Z lists slackers? My bad. I used to update it religiously, but have gotten lazy. Reminders like this, or when the new thread is made, help quite a bit. And to make more excuses, there has been a lot of action in this section recently (glad to have you back Anasazie), so I have not been able to keep up with every thread. I'm very interested in Mamet's work.

No worries man, me and QC have been quite busy adding directors and like i said further up, i'd update the list myself every time i added one if that was do-able. It's a shame some of the directors get lost so far down the list without a single reply as it's always good to get new names floating around to check out. I wonder if there's a way to push them up when a list gets modified?

I wonder if there's a way to push them up when a list gets modified? Well, mods can 'bump' threads, which puts them at the top but without anything saying why it's been bumped. I don't think they'll get (as) lost henceforth, because everybody seems to post with new rankings and ratings now, rather than editing previous posts.

Yeah fair enough, i suppose i'm the only geek who updates every director list after every viewing by a guy or girl that there's a list for.

Yeah cheers QC that's how i found it in the end. We post 'em so quick that i think they disappear off the first page before most have even seen them, so the a-z list is helpful for finding new guys i reckon?
