James Gray(1969 - )Surprised there's no thread on this guy already and even more surprised to have liked both these films so much, his next film sounds a bit dodgy though. 1. We Own the Night (2007) 8/102. Little Odessa (1994) 8/103. Two Lovers (2008) 7/104. The Yards (2000) 7/10

Haven't seen supposedly his superior THE YARDS or LITTLE ODESSA, but I quite enjoyed the street crime melodrama WE OWN THE NIGHT.
WE OWN THE NIGHT (2007) - ***1/2

1.We Own the Night 8/10
Was shocked at how good Phoenix and Mendes were in this. Sublime performances and 2 or 3 really, interesting and well set up scenes visually. I think I'll try to get my hands on Little Odessa soon.

Anyway, TWO LOVERS apparently is supposedly very good, just forgotten in the midst of Phoenix's meltdown/prank.

RRA, would you be watching it very soon? If so, let me know how it is, it is still running somewhere in my city.

All I can say is, everyone I know in my film clique really liked it, and Ebert did too. Maybe thats means nothing, but surely it'll be better than SLUMDOG at least.

Anyone seen Two Lovers.....Gray manages something i thought was impossible....get's a decent performance out of Paltrow! Another wonderful performance from Phoenix also, just missing something....he seems to fall just short of a masterpiece every time, but i can't figure out why!

Another wonderful performance from Phoenix also, just missing something....he seems to fall just short of a masterpiece every time, but i can't figure out why! What exactly is a masterpiece anyway? To be honest, more and more a "masterpiece" comes out of lightening by luck being trapped in a bottle rather than an auteur conciously deciding (or not) to make one by ambition or design or whatever. Or I'm talking out of my ass again, I don't know. As for TWO LOVERS, people tell me it's great shit but it just got overshadowed by Jaoquin Phoenix's epic public meltdown or epic public prank. No wonder James Gray wanted to kill him.
