Lucrecia Martel(1966 - )Another member of the New Argentine Cinema (including Alonso, Trapero etc) movement and definitely one to watch, one of the most talaented female film-makers in the world right now. Not quite on the level of Alonso yet, but is only going to improve from here. Next onto Pablo Trapero....anyone see anything by him? Kino? 1. The Holy Girl (2004) 7.5/102. The Swamp (2001) 7/10

She's very talented. I don't think she has a film that tops Los Muertos, but she and Alonso are at the top of contemporary Argentine cinema. I used to like The Holy Girl more than The Swamp, but I like the latter more now. Martel does a lot with image and sound; very deft. Skills-wise, she's already world-class. Her films seep.
Other female Argentine directors to keep an eye are Celine Murga and Lucia Puenzo. I think Ana and the Others is pretty great. XXY shows promise.
Trapero is good, but I've only seen Crane World (good) and Rolling Family (watchable). Adrian Caetano is kind of alright.

I love her compositions, so tight and claustrophobic, almost like the characters are going to burst out of them. I love the thick, dark atmosphere of impending doom and the brilliant, subtle, complex performances. Very good film-maker, just a couple of slightly immature areas in both films for me.
