not to start the favorite/best conversation again, but Im suprised you rate Heat and Insomnia a star higher then your 3rd favorite.
What exactly do you find this movie lacking in the technical perspective that you see in the other 2?

I find Heat to be superior and more well written, and as for The Insider, I think that's his most important film, to quote my soon to be posted proview, "It's about the ordinary man being fucked by those with power." It also contains Pacino's best performance of the 90's.
Not to say Collateral isn't important, it's just shy of a masterwork, but my enjoyment of it is mostly due to the hitman aspect of it. I like that plotline more then his other films, which is also no surprise Le Samourai is my favorite movie.

I find Michael Mann's action drama so much better then just his drama. Heat and Collateral are my favorites of his by quite aways.
I thought the messages, acting, and a lot more to be better in both The Insider and Ali, but overall I didnt find those films to have even close to the viewing pleasure of the first two.

Wet Dog, I'd be interested in hearing what you thought on Ali. And see The Insider if and when you can. Three hours of dialogue, though...

I actually rented The Insider on Tuesday, so I'll be watching it over the next few days.
Ali was just a by-the-numbers biopic, I thought.
If you like watching boxing (I don't), and you're interested in the life of Muhammad Ali (I'm not), and you like conventional biopics (I don't), then there's a lot there to grab you. Otherwise (and in my case), nah. Actually, I nearly passed away from boredom. It's before Mann made his digital photography look interesting, too.

Depp and Mann together? I can just see Vercetti doing a Little-Miss-Sunshine-scream right now.

I guess I was wrong, it seems it's Man vs. Depp, not a collaboration.
Mann Battles With Depp for Spy Movie Director Michael Mann has entered the race against Johnny Depp to make a film about Alexander Litvinenko, the ex-KGB agent who was fatally poisoned in London last year. Mann's film is based on the unpublished book Death Of A Dissident, which is being written by Litvinenko's widow Marina and Alex Goldfarb, who reportedly had close ties with the spy. The movie will focus on the Russian power structure enforced by the KGB and its successor the FRS and the "Wild West capitalism" that followed glasnost, with Litvinenko caught in the middle. Meanwhile, Depp's production company and Warner Bros have just announced plans to make a film based on the book Sasha's Story: The Life And Death Of A Russian Spy, which is currently being written by New York Times London Bureau Chief Alan Cowell. British police are still investigating Litvinenko's death, after traces of lethal radiation were found in his body when he was admitted to hospital three weeks before he died.
