I find quite a bit of the dialogue to be bad/awful (and there's so much of it). Some clunky histrionics in the performances, too. That's tougher to get by than one overstressed idea. It's also a bit self-consciously 'epic' at times (actually, in general).
I have a feeling it'll slip to the bottom of the stack when I get around to rewatching Boogie Nights and Sydney.

Julianne Moore was terrible beyond words.
Especially when she's talking with her lawyer. Apparently repeating the beginning of your 2-word sentence 5 times before moving on to the second word and then repeating those two words over and over again in random over while breathing heavily and pretending to cry constitues a solid portrayal of a drugged out woman who's newly falling in love with her ancient dying husband whom she married for money.
Cruise's performance was the best I've ever seen though.

I don't buy his bedside breakdown at all. His seminar performance was good... but you'd wonder how much acting is really involved there.
I agree on Moore. Don't forget the freakout in the pharmacy. But what the hell can you do with that kind of dialogue?
"Don't call me lady! I come in here! You call me lady! You look at me! You talk to him! He looks at me! You call me lady! I'm sick! I have sickness all around me and you call me lady! Suck a cock!"

Jesus Christ, I feel like I've had a shot of glucose in my arm. Just watched Punch-Drunk Love, and haven't felt as nervous or energetic or claustrophobic in a while. Talk about sustained relentless rhythms; that elongated music that plays throughout the early day-at-work scene (that culminates in Lena giving Barry her number and address), and the volume at which it plays, made me shiver with excitement. It's very effectively nauseating.
I think it's a really interesting neo-noir, too; an everyman seduced into a dodgy deal and dangerous underworld by an unknown (literally, here) femme fatale. Sandler's brilliant, as is Hoffman in the few scenes he's in.
As a fan of justified violence and as someone who relates to internal anger (and redemptive love; the scene where Barry confronts the supervisor and says he has so much strength in him now because of the love in his life made me want to jump up with joy), I thought it was a masterpiece.

Oh, and since this guy has got better and better with each film he's made, and since five films into his career he's made an absolute belter, class him as one of my favourites, and one of (hopefully) the future greats.

I'm going to buy a blue suit and red tie at the first possible economic opportunity. Thanks for the recommendation, Omar; I wouldn't have seen it as soon as I did if it wasn't for you.

And I don't have a crying problem, and I'm wearing this suit because I had a very important meeting this morning.

Hmm... I've been meaning to rewatch Sydney. I think it's been about four years. And that was when Magnolia was one of my favourite films. Boogie Nights needs a refreshing, too.
With that in mind:
1. There Will Be Blood (2007) ***** 2. Boogie Nights (1997) ****** 3. Sydney (1996) ***** 4. Punch-Drunk Love (2002) ***** 5. Magnolia (1999) *****
