And there in lies the problem with a black and white (not racially speaking) society...... Though past tragedies might account for a fucked-up moral grey-area in Polanski's actions - as it seems to account for his film career's recurring themes, etc. - I don't think we should forget how intelligent he is or seems to be. I don't think any defence of Polanski should be made on the grounds of "what he went through" as a child or with the whole Sharon Tate murder. That might kickstart a "slippery slope", bigger grey area in general for child molesters who were molested as children, etc. A defence should stem from the fact that he fled for the reasons that he did so, from the fact that it was 30 years ago and (for that alone wouldn't mean all that much) that the victim has said the things she's said. Any further pursuit of Polanski seems to be in the name of "justice", whether in defence of the idea as an all-conquering abstract (ridiculous) or as a means of self-appointing oneself as moral guardian of the victim (redundant) or her family (strange).

svsg, you should check out "Knife in the Water". For some reason, I feel like you would like it more than most of his films.
