I still keep thinking about Muriel and Last year at Marienbad. And very little about Hiroshima Mon Amour. In retrospect, the first two should get 4 stars in my book. If I watch any of those for the second time, they will most likely reach my all time top 3 immediately. And maybe even #1 for LYAM. My most favorite director, I guess. I need to watch more of his stuff. I read about his first English movie called Providence (not available on netflix), I just can't wait to watch it.

svsg has been doing research and has been telling me everytime Last Year at Marienbad is playing here in the Bay Area so that I can go see it. Thanks to his enthusiasm I just purchased tickets to go see it on December 7th. My girlfriend and I are going to make a day out of it in San Francisco with the movie being the highlight. I can't wait

Criterion's releasing Marienbad (also in Blu-Ray) in June. Looks like a nice set of extras. Can't wait to see the transfer.

QC, I don't know if you saw my request for a review of Providence above. Even if you can write a brief one, that will be appreciated

Sorry not much for reviewing average films, and I haven't seen it in a while
The first 2/3 are muttled, overly silly occurrences which are supposed to be part of an old man's creative process. It's just not as clever or abstract as his earlier work, it's also a bit vulgar and lacks any humorous relief. The ending is more austere and realistic, and pieces the films together pretty nicely. There's one really well done shot where the camera does a 360. It's all right but there's a lot of stuff I don't really care for, hence the 6.

I remember the VHS copy being about the best I've ever seen for a 60's European black and white, but obviously I look forward to this release and revisting one of my all time favs.

Not very. I've only seen it once.
I watched Hiroshima from a "trauma theory" angle at 9 in the morning. Loved the opening documentary opening, with the voice-over contradicting (outright denying, actually) the very images we're seeing; thereafter, everything just felt like a contrived set-up used to have this character say this and this character say that. Nothing wrong with that as a formal premise, but I don't think it was done particularly well. Like I said, though, the classroom setting and the time of day I watched it may have had a huge impact.
You need to see Shoah. It's the best film I've seen this year. (EDIT: Best thing I've seen since The Wire.)

Can you provide an IMDB link for Shoah? I get some 1985 movie when I search, not sure if it is the same you are talking about.

Yeah, Lanzmann's nine-and-a-half hour documentary. It's right up your alley.

Anyone heard anything about "Wild Grass" or L'incident? It competed for Palm dor at Cannes, but I don't see much written about it otherwise. In other news, I am getting LYAM DVD for my birthday! Can't wait to watch the restored version
