Cache Piano Teacher I saw Cache last week and I already forgot most of the movie except for the first scene where the tape rewinds and reminds the viewer that it is not real! Piano teacher is a nice character study and a difficult character to study. In spite of that, it did not have much impact on me after the viewing itself. I have to see Funny Games. Which version would you guys recommend?

Either. The second is a shot-for-shot remake, more or less. At the moment, I'm leaning more towards U.S.
Still, though, they're his least impressive films, that I've seen. (Though impeccably made, any theme he might have going for himself shoots itself in the foot.)

I was thinking of Caché just the other day, and how much it's one of the best films this decade.

I'm in love with this guy. I have read over everyone's criticism of "Funny Games", but for me, it's the best thing I've seen from him. Despite the criticism? Or did you disagree with it? 71 Fragments, Hidden and Code Unknown are amazing. I'd be very interested in how you respond to The Piano Teacher. It doesn't seem your kind of thing at all.

71 Fragments, and Haneke's style in general, influenced a short story I wrote for a Creative Writing unit earlier this year. You can read it here.

Speaking of which, what do you think about Haneke's use of sound (or lack there of) in his films? I find it VERY effective. Love it. His white/grey colour palette, too. Like the sound of a character pulling a plate from the shelf and placing it in the microwave: very detailed, very crisp; sharp, immaculate; with the distant hums of urban Europe outside. Stylised austerity: his recurring depictions of bourgeois life is something I'm deeply attracted to; very scathing in its quiet observations and refusals to judge. Caché, 71 Fragments and Code Unknown for me. I want all of his films on DVD, at hand. Despite liking them, I feel as if I don't fully understand Benny's Video, The Piano Teacher and Time of the Wolf (in hindsight, this last one reminds me more and more of Tarkovsky).

and Time of the Wolf (in hindsight, this last one reminds me more and more of Tarkovsky). Funny you should mention that. The entire time I kept thinking of "The Sacrifice".

In my Social Psychology class today, we talked about cognitive dissonance in regards to cultural and racial issues. As a professor, he might be the smartest person I've ever come across, but he recommends sub par movies all of the time for us to watch in relation to our discussions. Today, he recommended "American History X".
After class, I went up to him and STRONGLY recommended that he see "Cache".

Yeah me too....was put onto him after hearing how much of an influence he was on Akerman 70s work. Have you got onto checking her out? As much of a talent as Fassbinder was in those days. I reckon you'd be into her stuff, big influence on Tsai at some level i'd say.
Did you also like the colours of my rating and signature complimenting the colours in the painting? Total accident that one!

Haven't delved into Akerman at all; I ought to.
Have you seen Roy Andersson's films? They're very Hopper-like in mise-en-scene.

I've seen his two latest and love them! Songs especially has so much depth in each image it really is astonishing. You, the Living is one of the funniest films i've laid eyes on in years.
Have you seen any of his earlier stuff?

Are there any possible metaphorical or allegorical implications in Cache that flew over my head? I quite enjoyed it for the suspense, but left the film feeling a bit lost and confused.
