Chris Marker (1921- )1. Sans soleil (1982) 9/102. La jetée (1962) 9/10These are two of the most genuinely profound films I've ever seen. I can't wait to see more.

1. Sans soleil (1983) 2. La jetée (1962) 3. Une journée d'Andrei Arsenevitch (2000) 4. A.K. (1985) I can say in an unasuming way that if I were a filmmaker these would be the type of films I would want to make. I am obsessed with memory, time and travel, like Marker. Sans soliel is beautiful, one of the greatest things ever put on film, in my opinion.

It certainly sounds good. Jake, your very brief praise of it has made me want to see it. Soon.

Did you see both of those with the English narration too?

It's amazing how much of an imprint Sans Soleil has left on my mind. The way it slowly moves from a wonderful and interesting documentary to a surreal, almost abstract film is phenomenal. It's one of the best films ever made. I can't wait to see it again.

Is that a doctored quote? I tried searching for it and I found a near-identical quote from Marker here, but one in which he doesn't mention The Wire.

Kino was lying about it to get more people to watch.
"LOOK GUYS! CHRIS MARKER LIKES THE WIREZOMWT5F HAHA!!!"
Next thing you know he'll be quoting Jesus.

Well, that quote's as is, including The Wire, here. Looks like it was changed from the original interview all the same.

Bobby, I got it secondhand from Kent Jones (if that is indeed the Kent Jones I have in mind. LMAO). Over here in the comments section: www.davekehr.com/?p=30#commentsThen I figured it was good to go because Jones is a well-respected professional film critic and curator (even though he got some facts wrong in his Sight and Sound article!) and this is an older entry by Darren Hughes that had the same quote: www.longpauses.com/blog/2008/01/wire-moral-midgetry.htmlSo, yes, with that I posted it up. And just prior to coming back here (not knowing of Bobby's post), I did another search and someone on a Firefly board (red flag!) said it was quoted from a Marker interview in the booklet that came with the La Jetee/Sans Soleil Criterion, but then I went to the Criterion site to see if there was a booklet and there isn't any indication of a booklet. And now the Film Comment interview you posted = mea culpa. Will delete. Sorry, guys.
