LOL, maybe I was too sleepy, I had just then watched it. I meant to say that it did not have much impact on me

Thematically, other than the obvious emphasis on family relationships (which I like BTW), I feel that he dealt with very modern topics. I am not an expert on how post-war Japan looked like, but his female protagonists are remarkably modern in their thoughts, which I liked a lot. Definitely. The daughters in Ozu's films in Japanese historical context are rather progressive as is, say, the father and the view on marriage in Late Spring. The portrayal of families in his films are also rather progressive and non-traditional. The widowed childless daughter-in-law by traditional viewpoint doesn't offer anything, but she's more of a daughter to the couple than their own children! Ozu films are chronicles of a changing Japanese society. For example, the way modernization broke up the nuclear family in Tokyo Story. Ozu did look at family, but family in his films are really social relations as family affected work and work affected family. And most importantly for me, his characters come across as fully realized human beings. That's another feature that I admire so much. Important events are often "only" talked about. It works. I did, and I'm glad you've taken the plunge into his richly rewarding work! By the way, I overlooked recommending Autumn Afternoon to you. It's a different take on Late Spring. Lastly, don't you live around Dallas or something? 35 Shots of Rum is playing at the Angelika next month on the 18th. I highly recommend it considering you loved Late Spring. Claire Denis was inspired by Late Spring. I saw the Denis film last month, and I loved it!
