Alright, after some contemplation a few months ago about perhaps switching to a half-star system, I've decided I'll just be moving to a 5 star system. I'm also tightening up my standards a little bit and will be using 0 and 1 star rankings more often. I had abandoned updating my excel database for a while but it's now up to date. I don't plan on going through and changing anything on the board. A sizeable portion of my rankings moved up or down a star, but I'll just be moving to Wetdog's/Don Lope's star images for all new rankings I make. Just to give a rough idea of what type of significance my respective rankings hold for future reference, here's a breakdown of my database. ... 6 films ... 14 films ... 84 films ... 204 films ... 90 films 0 ... 35 films

So, would two stars now = two stars before?
Two stars translates as "a good film" for me.

Yeah just about. Nothings all that different I just wanted to allow myself to seperate 4 star films from 5 star films and I also want to be less hesitant to hand out 1 and 0 star rankings. The biggest change is that a lot of 2 star films became 1 star films, and some 1 star films became 0 star films.
I had just noticed that you, Capo, and others were handing 1 and 0 star ratings to films that they didn't hate, which I had previously reserved those rankings for.

Having done with stars, here's a new system, for a trial period. When I see new films and have to edit those threads, it's gonna be a nightmare, but fuck it, we'll see... Red means a film of lasting impact. Green means a film of significant impact. Blue means a film of little impact. I think, however, that if it catches you in the right mood at the right time, any and every films is watchable at worst. No film is of no interest. And so, green films can evolve to red if they stay with me over a long period of time, if I find myself coming back to them and can't stop thinking about them. The same from blue to green. Any thoughts...?

Actually, since all of David Lynch's films interest me (Dune is worth watching because it is so bad), I am changing "interest" to "impact".
Lasting impact, significant impact, little impact.
I've updated Aronofsky, Allen and Lynch.

I think this is a good move capo. Except that bad (whatever that means) movies do not get distinguished from "not so bad, but of little impact" movies. I don't know if I am expressing my thoughts correctly here.

Yeah, I know what you mean. But "bad" films are still often worth seeing because of notable works in the same director's oeuvre. Hitchcock's "bad" films are interesting to watch in comparison to his good ones, for instance.
Like I said, no film can ever have no impact on me, unless I fall asleep when watching it.

In the directors threads, coloured numbers denote the following:
Red = I love it. Green = I like it. Blue = I don't like it.

I might also introduce a 100 sign for Top 100 films. I haven't made a top 100, and I might have more or less than a 100 signs in the director threads, but it's just a rough count of possibles and maybes and probables.
Or I might narrow down to 50 and be super strict. Or TEN, and give it only to films with four stars from the old system.

For a moment or several today I considered the possibility that I may, after all, miss my star ratings. But fuck it, then I realised how much of a gimmick it had become for me in the end, where I was watching films not so much to see them, but to somehow validate my overall database more, with so many films of suchandsuch a rating, and so many films of another. The more films I saw, of course, the more I felt the need to keep revising these systems, only because it was somehow "wrong" to have more than ten films with four stars. What a load of horse-crap.
I like what I like now.

More because I see "[image]" everyfuckingwhere on the boards now than genuine interest, why did you change your stars, wetdog? And what do they mean? (For a board obsessed with star ratings, I'm surprised nobody else has asked, to be honest.)

Oh, they mean the same things. I just got rid of the special five-star rating and changed the colour of the four-star image to red. I deleted the old images from my Photobucket account before remembering that Boz and DVC use them too (sorry).

If the old one was "special", why is the new one red as well? Back when we started the boards, you were against making the green rating system yellow for four stars, under the grounds that that rating wasn't necessarily "special" for the users who were using it.

They stand out visually, but the rating itself doesn't. Not anymore, anyway.
And that was the argument you made when I wanted yellow stars for members who used the green rating system when we first started the board.

Yeah, I like the way they stand out visually. It's my highest rating, it just means I love the film. I'm not really agonizing over this anymore.

Meaning? You're placing less value on the star system, or what?
