Dog Altogether Paddy Considine 2007 | UK Two days in the life of a violently-inclined alcoholic. Considine shows his early photographic roots here: a finely shot short, a depressing character study of a man whose internal rage and paranoia propel him to cathartic violence (and subsequent acts of payback). Peter Mullan's typecast as the tormented central figure - one which the director as an actor has been associated with; it's a role Mullan plays exceedingly well, though, and Considine captures his urgency with rigid, retreating tracking shots as the actor walks with numbed aggression. It's a simple, well-done short with little means of character arc; redemption in the form of a hospitable shopkeeper is hinted at, but the final tone lingers as a rather sour one.
