Yeah, of course it's a generalization. That's what it's supposed to be. But he's definitely right about those films (and all Hollywood films) being unsuited to being labeled 'classicism'.

As Sullivan said, Classic refers to a time period, when in the American context. It is not meant to describe a style element, but a temporal element. The fact that American Classic films are by no means "Classical" in a genre or stylistic sense is interesting, though. I would very much like to read that author.

Yeah, I know (it's also a generic qualitative term directly related to the idea of the 'Golden Age'), but in treating cinema in the context of the other arts it makes sense to rethink it.
