I have a question for everybody here. I picked up this book, Fangoria's 101 Best Horror Movies You've Never Seen: A Celebration of the World's Most Unheralded Fright Flicks, recently because I feel like I've been running out of horror movies to see. So far I've only seen "popular" horror movies and want to go back and watch many of the movies mentioned in this book that may have been overlooked by most people. The movies mentioned here were all made from the 1970's until about 2003. So my question is, would anybody here be interested in my reviews of these movies? Many of them could be low budget B movies. If not I won't waste my time so please be honest. I will personally enjoy watching them on my own regardless.

I like genuinely scary films, but horror's quite a broad term. I'd be interested in your reviews...

How are you planning to get these movies in the first place? Are they really obscure? If so, probably your only hope is torrents or emule.

You can start with brief reviews. If you get good response, you can write longer ones. That way, you would have documented your experience of watching these rare horror flicks, without having wasted too much time. I would be interested in reading them. However I haven't seen much horror to participate in the discussions.

Blibble, svsg made a similarly-intended thread on disturbing movies; just linking you there so you can get a feel for how he did it.

but horror's quite a broad term. That's true and I've had a difficult time explaining that to friends. I will suggest a movie that I thought was scary and they say it was dumb and not scary at all. There are so many things that can possibly scare a person that there are sure to be a lot of people who don't share that same fear. I think that is why the majority of horror movies are rated lower than most other genres. For me there are movies that genuinely scare me but there are also other movies that fall into the horror category that I just think are fun. Sometimes watching a group of zombies catching and eating people in overly gruesome ways is more comical than frightening because it was just so over the top. I enjoy that. So I guess I want to watch these in hopes of finding some really scary movies as well as some really fun movies that make you go "ewww" and laugh at the same time.

They are mostly movies that the average person probably hasn't seen. I've already seen four of the movies mentioned in there before I got the book so they aren't too har to find. Of all the ones I'm very interested in, about fifteen are available on Blockbuster online for rent (several are listed as "very long wait" though) and only a few of them weren't available at all. I'll post a list of the movies mentioned when I get around to it. It wouldn't surprise me if you guys here have seen many of them already.

You can essentially forget the movies with "very long wait". I have some of them with that status for 6 months now

I have had The Wire at the top of my queue for months with that "very long wait" note and now that my mood has changed and I want to watch horror movies I suddenly got the first disc for The Wire. I've had a hard time watching the first episode because it's just not what I want to watch but I feel like I need to because I've waited so long to see it.
Anyway, for the scary movies I'm just going to list the "very long wait" ones first and hope I get lucky and if not then there are plenty of others.
One of the ones I'm looking forward to that was in this book was also one that Capo said I might like a long time ago called Motel Hell. It's basically supposed to be about a seemingly nice couple who own a motel and make the best sausages anyone has ever had but don't realize the secret ingredient is people. From the way it sounds this is a good example of one of the movies that is gross but fun. Not necessarily scary (at least from the way it sounds).

This was just recommended to me. My friend described a long tracking POV shot, from the perspective of the back of someone's head as they are chased around the opera house by managers and fans alike. Sounded interesting. Can anyone one here recommend or comment on the work of either Mario Bava or Dario Argento?

Blib, did you get to watch the movies recommended in Fangoria? Any (re)views/recommendations?
BTW, for some reason I really like the sound of the name "Mario Bava".

Blib, did you get to watch the movies recommended in Fangoria? Any (re)views/recommendations? I've watched a few and so far only Let Sleeping Corpses Lie is worth watching, in my opinion. The rest are silly. However, I never heard of Fangoria until I found that book, and it turns out they have been the leading magazine covering horror for decades. I checked out their website and have really enjoyed mingling with other horror fans on the Fangoria Forums. As with most big forums, there are plenty of idiots, but there are a lot of very intelligent horror fans there, and it's nice to meet them. That's how I discovered the "Giallo" genre (Gialli for plural... I'm still trying to figure out how to use the term properly in a sentence). I'm not sure why I'm so attracted to horror films the last several years, but it's an interest that keeps growing. I usually go in waves for everything else.... comedy, drama, action/war, etc... but horror stays constant for me. I'm always happy when the regulars here on FCM, on rare occasion, talk highly of a horror film because it makes me feel like I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to at least one genre of filmmaking.

No, I haven't yet, but I will eventually. I haven't forgotten. I have seen parts of Bava's "Diabolik". I watched Suspiria and really enjoyed it! It had good scary music, and a lot of really interesting camera angles. That probably sounds funny coming from me, but I'm definitely training myself to pay attention to cinematography I also got Deep Red from NetFlix but I'm confused as hell. I watched about 15 minutes and couldn't figure out why the language kept changing from English, Italian and what sounded like German. Apparently the movie was heavily edited when released in English, so when they made the DVD they added in the extra scenes but left it in the original languages because they couldn't find the English tracks. I'm hoping to find a subtitled or all English version of the DVD because I was hooked even though I didn't understand half of the conversations.
