We're going to try to do it earlier this year, aiming to announce the winners on, say, Sunday March 1st. That means final voting closes on Saturday 28th February and final nominations are to be submitted on Saturday February 21st. Last year we introduced new eligibility rules that accomodated the inclusion of certain films that were technically (ie: according to IMDb) from the year previous to the award year. In this case that means any IMDb-2007 title that received NO nominations last year and received only limited distribution during 2007 may be eligible for this year's awards (examples of such films would be My Winnipeg, Nightwatching, The Man from London, The Banishment, etc). See the below-linked Nominations thread for a list of all films nominated last year. Last year's categories can be found here. They're subject to change again this year. Any suggestions or questions?

How about a category for BEST ACTION CINEMA or aka Best Stunt Coordination?
I mean unlike the AMPAS, can't we give legit respect to the cool shit we see in action movies?

I'm not opposed to a secondary Best Film category like the Best Comedy or Musical category at the Golden Globes, to give the less serious films a chance at recognition.
Best Action Sequence? Or maybe Best Action Direction?

As with other year(s), I'd like a "Best Titles Sequence" (meaning the opening credits, in terms of font, rhythm, expositing tone, etc.).
But I wouldn't fight for it. I'm woefully underwatched this year.

Or maybe Best Action Direction? Not a bad idea with the GG-inspiration. And well, I say Direction, though which ever it don't matter. I just think if we do Best Action Sequence, only one per film can be nominated. We dont want that category clogged up with THE DARK KNIGHT or QUANTUM OF SOLACE or whatever.

so Im thinking that
Funny Games 4 Months, 3 weeks, 2 days (except maybe Kino saw it last year?) The Visitor Cassandras Dream
should all be eligible. 2007 titles, but I dont think anyone viewed them before 2008.

Also, back to the Best Action Sequence category, here are some suggestions, but not necessarily my final ballot of nominees:
"WW2 Sub/Boat Battle" - THE CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON "Truck Chase/Flip" - THE DARK KNIGHT "Finale March/Beatdown" - REDBELT "Jolie/McAvoy Car Chase" - WANTED "Punisher takes out the Hotel Trash" - PUNISHER: WAR ZONE "Statham Trying to Get Back to Car" - TRANSPORTER 3
You know, any suggestion to help ya out.

SVSG and Capo also saw 4M3W2D and nominated it for several categories in last year's awards. I wouldn't mind having it eligible again, but where does that leave a film like I Don't Want To Sleep Alone? I think only Wetdog and Bobby nominated it for last year's awards, and perhaps the film's other fans saw it in 2008. Would that also be eligible?

The Wrestler hasn't opened in your area yet, RRA?
I would've liked better editing (i.e., take lessons from the countless magnificently edited action & fight sequences from Hong Kong martial arts and action films), but still, they were great sequences.

Oh, if people want to get caught up on worthy films for consideration, watch Chop Shop. I'm not saying you all are gonna like it, I'm just saying, it deserves as much a shot to be looked at as the Benjamin Buttons, Frost/Nixons, etc.

Ill watch it soon, its on Netflix instant viewing and Im looking forward to it.
Nix 4M, 3W, 2D if that many people have seen it (still highly recommended viewing)
If I was going to tell people to see some stuff that I havent seen discussion about here... Man on Wire was one of the best documentaries Ive seen in years. Role Models was a really under the radar comedy that I thought was WAY better than some of the highly regarded comedys from the Apatow camp. Copy that last sentence, exchanging Role Models for Hamlet 2. In Bruges wasnt really a comedy as the Golden Globes would indicate. It has its funny moments but its more drama in my opinion. Fun hitman movie, and the only thing that comes to mind that Ive ever enjoyed Colin Farrel in.

Nope. It goes national on the 23rd, a day after the Oscar nominations are announced. Same with REVOLUTIONARY ROAD. And well, I'm open to suggestions for that proposed category. I'm just trying to remember shit from 2008, you know? If you can, do so and I can Netflix and help pimp them or whatever.

sounds good. I noticed IMDb has Chop Shop as 2007 as well. That should be 08
More than the "what year is this film" dilemmas, I think we should also have a topic discussing whether actors are supporting or leads. Frankly I think the studio positioning stuff is bullshit ("We dont want Winslet competing against herself so we are going to call her supporting in the Reader"). We did well with this last year, nominating Bardhem as a lead in NCFOM.
I would vote to start a list of people on the bubble between supporting and lead. The next person can copy and paste the list and add their vote. THey can also add more actors to the list. Everyone can only vote for each actor once. If this is an ok idea, Ill get started....
Kate Winslet in The Reader (1 vote for lead, 0 for supporting) Ralph Fiennes in The Reader (0,1) Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight (1, 0) Aaron Eckhart in The Dark Knight (1,0) Phillip Seymour Hoffman in Doubt (0,1) Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder (1,0) Dev Patel in Slumdog Millionare (1,0)

I'm not sure how any of this works, but just wanted to say that i also say the Romanian film and the Tsai film in 2007 and wouldn't consider them 2008, especially the latter which had was shown in a few fests in 2006!

Role Models was a really under the radar comedy that I thought was WAY better than some of the highly regarded comedys from the Apatow camp. Copy that last sentence, exchanging Role Models for Hamlet 2. RM is a solid, solid comedy. Destroys Forgetting Sarah Marshall which barely made me laugh. I enjoyed H2, too. The trailer didn't do the movie justice. The Promotion is a nice low-register comedy. It's coming out soon on DVD. More for chuckles than belly laughs. Glad you loved Chop Shop. What did you think of the lead? I wasn't blown away by him like some were, but he was good overall, excellent at times. It rankles me that this excellent film that shows something about America today is so overlooked. If you're down for some more very good small American films, check out Shotgun Stories.
