Yes, I have. No where near as visually striking as I had hoped, but Sam Rockwell does a remarkable job in a role that is a bit challenging (if you see it, you'll know what I mean). He was the film for me. The use of models was nice, and there were good moments. Not mind blowing like I had hoped. Thanks. Somehow I was getting way too excited for the film

Thanks. Somehow I was getting way too excited for the film Yeah, I was really excited for it too. I had a lot of positives thoughts when I left the theater, but now, a couple of weeks later, eh. I think it's good I don't do little reviews anymore after I watch a film. I need to let them sink in more. Though of course, when I do monthly updates, I am probably biased to the last couple of films I watched.

Jenson, have you posted your review of Grand Torino yet? No. I haven't written it yet. I haven't seen the movie in a while either. I will have it up somewhere between now and March of 2013 though.

Anyone ever watched a film without subtitles?
I'm seriously contemplating watching Visconti's The Stranger at the cinema in such a way, having read the book and all.

I have.
During my trip to Europe (an overrated continent), for some reason or another while in Italy, we on the bus watched GLADIATOR in Italian. No subtitles.
A fun experience.

I've watched a few short films with sparse dialogue without subtitles. I wouldn't watch a feature length film with any substantial amount of dialogue in it without subtitles.

I realized I might have a problem with honest, realistic, brutal depictions of society in art. I think this is my problem with The Sopranos. When I experience a work, I'm kind of looking to escape society, not be reminded of its problems. To expand on this, I think it's no coincidence that I have an affinity for films like Spirit of the Beehive, Mother and Son and Dead Man, and no coincidence why I feel Godard is on a different plane from the other New Wave filmmakers. While I can appreciate the way in which certain artists are able to comment on society by simply portraying as is, I don't feel any real enjoyment or fulfillment from experiencing their work.
