RRA, I would love to see a review from you of one of the films that doesn't come under your favorite genres - action/thriller.

For whatever reason, if I had to, I'd bet Ronnie hasn't even seen Weekend.

For whatever reason, if I had to, I'd bet Ronnie hasn't even seen Weekend. It would certainly make you feel better, now wouldn't it? I'm certain you got a migraine when TIS compared you and me equally.

im gonna mow through a bunch of Kurosawa Ive yet to see. Watched Throne of Blood and Dreams last week....gonna see Drunken Angel, Yojimbo, High and Low, Red Beard, and Hidden Fortress. Already seen Ran, Seven Samurai, Ikiru, Rashoman, and Stray Dog. See Harakiri and Samurai Rebellion. My recommended order (starting from top priority to low): Harakiri High and Low Yojimbo Samurai Rebellion Red Beard Drunken Angel Hidden Fortress Im expanding my Kurosawa marathon to all of his 16 movies with Mifune. Ive really been digging Far East cinema lately. Just watched The Burmese Harp. Amazing. Spacing something every third movie or so in my Netflix

Im expanding my Kurosawa marathon to all of his 16 movies with Mifune. Cool. If you haven't seen Harakiri yet, you're still going to see it soon, right? Awesome. I really like The Burmese Harp; a great anti-war film. Another great war film by the same director is Fires on the Plain. A totally different vibe.

Speaking of Kurosawa, if anyone ever asks anyone here to recommend some shit of his to watch...of course go through the obvious (YOJIMBO, etc.), but also suggest STRAY DOG. Really that great little Japanese film-noir police procedural surprised the shit out of me...if at the most because its a great little picture that nobody usually brings up when his name is mentioned.

If you like stray dog try Drunken Angel...its similarly film noir-ish
Still planning on squeezing in Harakiri and Samurai Rebellion soon.

Still planning on squeezing in Harakiri and Samurai Rebellion soon. Peep the Harakiri trailer here, yo. It rightfully left out significant clips from the best and meatiest sequences. Don't sleep on Kobayashi; he's a major Japanese director.

his works are criminally unrepresented in Netflix. Not Edward Yang bad, but they only have like 3 of his movies. lame. When I love the movies you recommended thats basically all I get

Two of the three are masterpieces, though - Harakiri and Kwaidan. Samurai Rebellion is excellent as well.
Lot of Japanese cinema has yet to find its way to Region 1 DVD. Good news is that Criterion's releasing Kobayashi's mammoth The Human Condition. So here's to hoping more Kobayashis, Oshimas, Imamuras, Ichikawas, and so on.

Of course, DRUNKEN ANGEL some years back almost got remade by Scorsese with his bitch Leo DiCaprio..or is it the other way around? As for Netflix, talk about a double-header I got stuck having to order in: BENJAMIN BUTTON and KNOWING. Saw BB already, not exactly enthusiastic of seeing it again, and well KNOWING...is KNOWING. Of course she gets her way. I can't say no to her. Besides, LORD OF ILLUSIONS and STRANGE DAYS....I had to feel the other side of the coin for them.

i dont think any show is as laugh out loud funny as Da Ali G show, but I just am not getting any laughs out of the trailer. The fictional storyline element was very off putting in Borat and it looks even more prevalent in this one.
His characters are best when he brings out people's predjudice. supposedly adopting a baby and having a velcrow suit just arent that funny to me. Interviewing people that hate gays and making them mad/uncomfortable is. Hopefully its more of that than the trailer looks like it will be.

I've been kind of wanting to see American Beauty again. I haven 't seen it since it came out and my tastes have changed completely since.

did you like it before or no? Its a fairly devisive movie... I really like American Beauty....Sam Mendes is a director giving diminishing returns. Each movie gets significantly worse to me, although I dont anticipate hating Away We Go as much as I hated Revolutonary Road.
