The Cheat Cecil B. DeMille 1915 USA A greedy woman gets involved with a wealthy Burmese man, who vows to take her from her husband. Beautifully shot, full of expressionistic lighting and dramatic, memorable moments: it's clearly pre-Hays code, because some of the key scenes are quite daring - the Burmese branding his new possession with a steaming signature, and the subsequent shooting is terrifically shot - we see it only because of the shadows caused on the wall, and when we cut back, there's blood all over the guy's chest. Interesting too as an example of the growing Orientalism of the time.
