À bout de souffle Breathless Jean-Luc Godard 1959 France In Paris, an ultra-cool car thief kills a cop and seduces the girl he loves while running from the police. In many ways typical of a would-be master's debut; original and influential, but also very tame, and, in the context of work made hereafter, a rather jejune affair. It remains of much worth, however, due in most part to the innovative cinematography - when Godard isn't cutting up conversations with random jump edits, Coutard's shoulder camera tracks its stars with casual flair, capturing Paris at night in loving black-and-white. Its charming stars and their characters fumble around in the moment, from admiring Bogart and stealing cars to questioning one's own integrity as a woman and a writer, both of whom are caught up in questions of individual freedom and choice - analysis of the film through an existential framework is most interesting.

I just watched it on TV a few days ago and enjoyed it even more than the first time. It is decades ahead of its time.
Have you seen Hiroshima Mon Amour, Capo? It was made in the same year, and it's even better.

No, but I plan on getting round to Resnais promptly.
So little time, so many films...

I saw this on the Sundance Channel and was surprised in that I didn't enjoy it.
I taped it, so I'll probably watch it again later this week.

Breathless Jean Luc Godard 1959My first Godard. Loved the music, loved the characters, loved the fact that I couldn't sit through the film without breaking for a cigarette, loved the jump cuts especially. I hate to beat a dead horse, but the freehand did bother me at times. It took me a while to get into it, and I admittedly was a bit perplexed by the ending, but overall a very strong first impression of one of the masters.
