Withnail & I Bruce Robinson 1986 | UK
Two failed actors hire a country cottage, but the owner, the homosexual uncle of one who has eyes for the other, has other plans.
A film all about inertia as a disease and putrid product of city life, set in the sixties but feeling just as much like the eighties in which it was made (unemployment as a way of life in Thatcher's Britain). Its portrait of seedy interiors and grimy exteriors (everything's grey, characters are perpetually cold, alcohol offers the only refuge) is gross and hilarious: the script is endlessly witty and the acting is unsurpassed in English comedy (possibly the most quotable film ever). The eccentric Englishness of Grant, McGann and Griffiths engrosses and delights; Grant in particular is astounding, blessed with the rare ability of making one laugh with a simple exclamation such as, "Cunt!"
