My brother purchased this movie for me today, and I've seen some mixed thoughts on it: wetdog appears to like it...I think he gave it four stars.
I was just curious as to what some other opinions were. I never really thought too much about this movie until now.

I have yet to see it but I'm obviously more interested with Wetdog's recent rating. While I had originally written it off as a simple and stupid campy 70's horror flick, I'm beginning to come under the impression that it is perhaps an original and fantastic film, its long term effect perhaps hampered by a series of shitty sequels (read: Alien). Am I getting that at all correct? Hopefully will be checking it out soon.

My only comment is, what the fuck?
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning
You cannot fucking do that, grammatically speaking. If the title begins with "the" you can't fucking subtitle it with a "the" title.
GAH
What the fuck!?

Shitty or not (I consider it a great film), how is Alien a 'sequel' to Texas Chainsaw?
Texas Chainsaw features some of the best sound design, production design, cinematography and editing ever.
Tobe Hooper also has Weird down to a fine art.

Shitty or not (I consider it a great film), how is Alien a 'sequel' to Texas Chainsaw? He doesn't mean that Alien is a sequel to The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, but that he thought the effectiveness of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre might have been ruined by having bad sequels, which he believes happened to the Alien series. Valenti: It's a great film. Make sure to watch it late at night in pitch-black darkness with the volume turned up as much as possible.

Ahh... sorry, I misread. Supposedly Hooper's own TCM 2 is interesting; it's a comedy. I saw some of it one night on TV, Dennis Hopper having a 'chainsaw fight' (rapier style) with Leatherface on a long dining table in these enormous catacombs. The third is supposedly a weak rehash of the first, and the fourth turns Leatherface into a transsexual clown, or something. The 2003 'remake' is mediocre. Interestingly, Hooper has signed on to direct the third film in the new franchise (the seventh altogether).

I just watched it.
AAAAAAH.
...
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH. I'll need to sleep in my wife's embrace, like a little child, for the next three days. Absolutely horrifying.

It would've been better if my brother hadn't told me so much about it...I was totally unsurprised by the first death, but by the end of the movie I was in a trance.

What about The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring/The Two Towers/The Return of the King? I didn't know that was grammatically improper.

My Proview on the film last read:
Despite the reductive opening voice-over, this is effectively realised throughout, to be, firstly, a surreal build-up to something not quite right, secondly, a series of deaths as shock treatment, and thirdly, a repelling sequence of bizarre, cannibalistic horror. The effect the sound has on the whole feel is incredible, with, when things are quiet, a radio announcer telling constantly bad news, and, during the final torture sequence, expressionistic use of non-diegetic ambience, such as, among other things, a drill on a worksite. Fantastic stuff.
My favourite scene is when Sally finds the gas station at night, seemingly in the relieving tranquility of the room, and then sees the meat hanging up, being cooked. The effect the shot has on the viewer, after the previous cut-aways to cattle in the slaughter-house, when the gang are travelling in the early scenes, is very unsettling, and effective in assuming the paranoia of the character whilst also acting as a plot revelation. Very ambiguous filmmaking. But the shot of the gas station owner stabbing at Sally with a broom stick in his truck is one of the most disturbing scenes I can ever think of.

"Now, now just be quiet. HEEE HEE HEH!" *poke poke poke*.
Maybe I'm reading more into it that I should, but that act seemed very sexual.
