The greatest documentarian of them all? By the look of him, the wisest too.

The greatest documentarian of them all? Now that I've seen more of his work over the past couple of months, I think he's one of the top five to ten greatest filmmakers of all-time. Put money in his pocket. You can purchase them on DVD from Zipporah films. And you gotta see Titicut Follies, Law and Order, Hospital, and Near Death now.

I'm fascinated by all of these.
We watched clips of Titticut Follies two years ago, comparing and contrasting it to clips of Morris's Thin Blue Line as a starting point on documentaries.
I much preferred this guy's style, at the time.

Not sure if you're talking to me Kino, but I've seen Hospital, look at the ratings once more. I have access to T Follies and the two Domestic Violence films, but haven't checked them out yet. I saw all these films in a short space of time and was quite overwhelmed, so i'm having a FW break.....for positive reasons of course!
I almost agree with your sentiments, i'd probably name him amongst the top 20 film-makers of all time and definitely in the top 3, perhaps top 2 American film-makers ever. Welfare would probably make a 20 fave films list, i was totally blown away by it!
Where are your ratings for viewing inspiration?

Not sure if you're talking to me Kino, but I've seen Hospital, look at the ratings once more. My mistake. Basic Training Belfast, Maine Canal Zone Central Park Domestic Violence Domestic Violence 2 High School High School 2 Hospital Juvenile Court Law & Order Near Death Public Housing State Legislature 3.9/4 The Store Titicut Follies Welfare None of what I've seen is less than a must-see. All of these looks into institutions and the individuals within them are masterfully constructed and never simplifies the complexity of the issues and themes. Wiseman is one of the greatest of all filmmakers.
