I am bored tonight (but quite alive):
I read a positive review for Joaquin Phoenix's new film, "Two Lovers", in which they sighted his recent interview with David Letterman*.
Over the past couple of months I have read snippets on IMDb and the like about Phoenix retiring from acting to pursue a career in music. Then I heard he wanted to go into hip-hop. Then I heard he performed oddly at some clubs in Las Vegas. Then, I read that it was a hoax being filmed by Phoenix's brother-in-law Casey Affleck.
Now, his appearance on the David Letterman show a week ago puts a face to this news. It could all be a hoax, or maybe he's having a nervous breakdown. Either way, it is a strange direction for him to be going, and he, despite being from the Phoenix clan, seems like an unlikely person to pull off such a thing, considering his previous persona. It's odd, but funny.
* = I realize that a lot of people go on his show and act zany. It seems to have become the stomping ground for actors who want to come off as strange, i.e. Andy Kaufman, Crispin Glover, and now Phoenix.

Its a hoax, and I'm just surprised how far people have bought that Joaquin has gone nuts for real.

It's neither a hoax nor a nervous breakdown.
Some lonely file clerk, who had aspiring dreams of being a hip-hop artist, found a portal into Phoenix's mind, and is using his celebrity to accomplish his own dreams.

Director Grey Blasts His Star, Joaquin Phoenix
27 March 2009 2:37 AM, PDT
Director James Gray is blaming Joaquin Phoenix for the box-office failure of his recent movie, Two Lovers, which has taken in just $1.63 million after five weeks in limited release, despite largely positive reviews and nominations for the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival and the Best Foreign Film award at France's César Awards. Phoenix, who starred in the movie with Gwyneth Paltrow, appeared on TV shows to promote the movie bearded, chewing gum, and speaking often incomprehensibly. In an interview with Thursday's London Times, Gray said that when Phoenix appeared on David Letterman's TV show, Letterman tried to discuss the movie with Phoenix, "but the only thing that's out there now is a crazy person with a beard making a fool of himself." As for the movie that Phoenix's brother-in-law, Casey Affleck, is shooting about Phoenix's supposed transition from actor to rapper, Gray said, "I have no idea what the hell that guy is shooting. ... The whole thing is not to my taste, and I've let Casey know this." As for speculation that it's all an elaborate hoax, Gray said, "He has his own recording studio [in his house]. So if this is a hoax, then it's the most elaborate thing that I have ever seen. ... But if it isn't, you know, I think he needs, well, help."

"Two Lovers" was the third collaboration between Phoenix and Grey.
