L'éclipse du soleil en pleine lune Eclipse: Courtship of the Sun and Moon Georges Méliès 1907 France A group of scientists gather to watch the moon block out the sun. It starts off as rather frivolous comedy (as regards the overall impact of the film) full of obnoxious students playing tricks on their old, foolish teacher; then it moves onto the eclipse itself. Two men's faces on a blackscreen, one the sun, the other the moon, and both seducing one another from opposite ends of the frame, until they meet in the middle, the sun behind the moon, no longer in shot, and the moon making absurd, homo-erotic gestures. Rather quite funny, now; it's the kind of visual allegory that has been all but lost.
