Rambo III Peter MacDonald 1988 USA The Vietnam veteran takes on Soviet forces in Afghanistan to rescue an old friend. One-man army kind of stuff; even messier (and not as fast) as the first sequel, it's quite laughable, really. Dedicated to the "gallant troops of Afghanistan", it's a Cold War propaganda piece with only hints of bitterness toward the US higher-ups - they've been tamed completely since the second film, in order to serve up an even nastier Russian, and a small army behind him who are determined to keep Rambo within their borders. It can probably be summed up by one scene's props: in the Russian villain's office sits a chessboard and hangs a photo of Lenin. Filmic shorthands to an extreme!
