All the President’s Men Alan J. Pakula 1976 USA Two reporters of the Washington Post uncover the Watergate scandal. A talky, heavy going, though always absorbing drama based on the real life events which brought Nixon down from office. The use of sound is brilliant and notable, with a rich audio texture evoking a world of frantic journalists - one scene that stands out is that in which our two protagonists meet with a secret informer and have to raise their voices to be heard over a plane; it is the kind of excessive detail unnecessary to story but adds to the plausibility. The scenes in the office are cluttered with the sound of typewriters and phone conversations overlapping, and they are complimented visually by the 'monotonous' long-takes and vast, white office ceilings, on which are rows and rows of lights that span from the foreground right to the very background of frame. The acting all round is tremendous.
