Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai Jim Jarmusch 1999 France / Germany / USA / Japan A black hitman for the Mafia, who lives by an ancient Samurai law, is betrayed by his employers and seeks revenge. A collision of cultures whose problems arise through a lack of communication - though one of the key friendships in the film is between an English-speaking assassin and a French-speaking ice-cream seller. Interesting and very funny stuff; RZA's soundtrack is brilliant. Jarmusch dissolves and fades his way through a plot reminiscent of Melville's Le samouraï, adding various intertitles of quotes from ancient samurai texts. It's very philosophical, very original, and one of those films that manage to be artistic and, if it had been marketed a bit better, very popular. Of all the killings that occur in the film, the best bits are when Ghost Dog drives through the streets at night listening to his personal CD collection.
