Zerkalo Andrei Rublev Stalker Solyaris The Killers Nostalghia Capo, did you talk about your big-screen experience of Zerkalo and Nostalghia somewhere? Did you watch them in close succession? How was the experience?

I didn't see Nostalgia on the big screen. I saw Mirror and Ivan's Childhood. I went into both quite tired; Ivan won me over eventually (I'd seen it before), but Mirror had me from the off. The print was fine.

Yeah the first half is quite pretentious i found too, seemed to think he needed to do a Bergman because he used his island maybe, all over-articulated internal torment!!!!! Does get better though, so stick with it.

I must revisit Tarkovsky's films. Got a hunch he fell off after Stalker.

Yeah i need to revisit Nostalghia...it was the second film of his i saw a long long time ago and the only one i haven't seen more than once, i remember loving it and it is more vivid in my mind than some of the others. I think it might be the only one i haven't seen on the big screen too......I saw Stalker in a dark room with strangers last year and even that went down slightly in my estimation. Would love to get hold of the book!

I got Mirror in the mail. It's my first Tarkovsky and I don't know much about it or him at all. I usually check tvguide.com before watching a 'high-art' film, but they don't have it listed! I thought they had every movie.
You will have to be my tvguide.com. How should I prep myself for this? What should I be looking for and expecting?

Long takes, wind, and a house on fire.

I usually hate movies with wind, but I think I'll still give this a try.

How should I prep myself for this? What should I be looking for and expecting? A couple of advices - 1. For some reason, like me, if you do not understand the film (I mean plot wise [actually there is not much of a plot in the conventional sense], not thematically) the first time, try watching it a second time. 2. You should be looking at it as a very autobiographical work, which is what it is essentially (except for one scene which he included to help audience make sense of it all).

"An artist never works under ideal conditions. If they existed, his work wouldn't exist, for the artist doesn't live in a vacuum. Some sort of pressure must exist; the artist exists because the world is not perfect. Art would be useless if the world were perfect, as man wouldn't look for harmony but would simply live in it. Art is born out of an ill-designed world."
- Tarkovsky

^ love that quote. And also Andrei Rublev, which is based on that thought.

That thought has been in my head for years, but I've always been afraid to say it and kind of repressed it considering I'm so fond of Art. I felt guilty that one of my greatest passions is a result of "an ill-designed world".
I think I will watch Rublev tonight.

Jenson, did you like Mirror? I never ended up watching it. When my brother went to the Air Force, he sent back all the Netflix movies and ended our registration. Also, my school library doesn't have the movie, so it will be a while before I see it. Shoot :/
